As we move towards more "natural" ways of wearing our hair, many of us have been searching for natural products. Many people will do any and everything including using bar soap or harmful concentrates to avoid over-the-counter (OTC) products...especially since they're now thought to cause cancer.
How did it all begin? In 1998, an email chain letter began circulating which stated that many of the common ingredients in shampoos actually cause CANCER...yeah, the Big C. Here's an excerpt from that email..."BUT the fact is that SLS is used to scrub garage floors, and it is very strong. It is also proven that it can cause cancer in the long run, and this is no joke."* Uhm...yeah it is.
The email's purpose, like many chain letters circulating today, are meant to instill fear. I'm sure we've all received the ones about not receiving calls that..., don't sit on seats that..., plea
se send money to the girl that was kept in a dungeon by her wicked step parents who happen to be monkeys and who needs you to send her $50 ASAP! We quickly debunk these emails but an email stating that shampoo causes cancer, that's just got to be true right?
One of the main reasons that people argue against sulfates is that it causes eye irritation. Hmm, shampoo in your eyes causes irritation? Wow, who'd a thunk that? Shoot, doesn't virtually ANYthing that comes in contact with your eyes cause irritation?
What I find most interesting about most of the sites that attest to existence of a carcogenin is that they are most often than not accompanied by a product ad for natural shampoo. Isn't that ironic?
Either way, shampoo's don't cause cancer and even if the ingredients used in them did, the same stuff is in soap you use on your body, hands, to wash your dishes so that should propably freak you out more than anything.
What is harmful about over the counter shampoos is that they are in fact too strong. Meaning, they strip your hair of what's bad as well as what's vital.
