THIS ARTICLE IS A REPRINT OF AN ARTICLE ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON NAANI.COM IN 2002. WE’VE DECIDED TO REVIVE THE DEBATE TO SEE HOW MUCH WE AND VISITORS HAVE GROWN…HOPEFULLY.

I remember back in college that every now and then I’d spot a (dread)locked head on campus. The irony was that none of them belonged to my African-American peers. I didn’t know what to think when I saw a White person with dreadlocks. At the time, I didn’t fully understand their historical significance myself so I thought, “Who am I to judge?”

Obviously these people were brave enough to embrace a traditionally African style that even some Blacks have difficulty accepting, so why hate?

When I started researching (dread)locks and natural hair on the web, most of the sites I stumbled upon catered to a White audience. I thought dreadlocking African hair was a trial but after reviewing some of these sites, it seemed White people take locking to a whole notha level.

I’ve seen sites that not only recommend using vats of beeswax, but also toothpaste, glue…honey???? On top of that, some boast the ability to lock one’s hair in a matter of just a few weeks which anyone with locked hair knows is a joke.

So it got me thinking and I decided to pose a few questions. What do you think of White people with dreadlocks? Is it a lifestyle or hairstyle for them? Are they ever truly dreadlocked?

Dread is dread. Anyone who says different is a racist. ONE love. How long will man hate and discriminate?

A white person with dreads. Oh no. The world is coming to an end. I can’t believe there was a poll created on this subject, to actually figure out if a person’s hairstyle offends you.

I’m white, and I have dreads. I have had them for six years, try and unlock them!

So why do I have dreads if I’m not white? Simple. I was fascinated with the black culture. Ever since I took a trip to the islands when I was 5, I became instantly in love with the entire lifestyle of the islands and the culture that surrounds it. Why was I fascinated, because I didn’t grow up in the islands? It is only human to be fascinated with something that you are not familiar with. I am not fascinated with the white culture, because it’s natural to me. It is my way of life. I am not fascinated with grandfather clocks, because my grandparents had them all over the place. I keep getting the feeling that the Blackman wants the Whiteman to see black culture, see black lifestyle, recognize it, but don’t try to understand it. Well too bad, now that I have seen it, I have recognized it, I find it very intriguing. The music is more interesting to me, the art is more interesting, and I love listening to my reggae and wearing my flip-flops.

If you see a white person with dreads and it offends you walk up to them and introduce yourself. Most likely they will respond with a positive action (smile, handshake, and there name). Then tell them that there hairstyle offends you and see where that smile goes, watch there hand drop. Now you have just separated yourself from them, because of a skin color issue. So now the white person has had a bad experience with a black person, not because of racial comment, but instead a hair style. So what happens now, the next time a black person approaches this white person?

yes, I read someones comment about white peoples locks never locking.i can understand your frustration, but isn”t it a compliment that someone from another race would want to learn and share an african american culture.i have dreadlocks, and enjoy learning more and more about the cultures of african americans.i do know who i am though.i am white, but we are all peole and we should take time to learn, share, and love one anothers cultures.
